(London SW1) Britain's oldest scientific society, founded in 1660. Informal meetings had been held since 1645 to discuss 'natural philosophy' – meaning experimental science as opposed to theories inherited from classical authors. The publication of scientific papers in the society's Philosophical Transactions has been continuous from 1665. Until 1847 fellowship was open to anyone interested in science, but since then it has been awarded in recognition of original work. Up to 40 new fellows and six foreign members are elected each year. The society gives various awards of which the *Copley medal carries the greatest prestige.
