(23km/14m SW of Northampton) Britain's foremost motor racing circuit and the location of the *British Grand Prix (until 1987 the event alternated with *Brands Hatch). Silverstone was a World War II airfield; it was adapted for motor racing in 1948 and was opened with an RAC Grand Prix. The first official British Grand Prix (which happened to be also the first race in the newly established world championship for drivers) took place at Silverstone in 1950.
