(16km/10m SW of Reading) The site of a Roman town, Calleva Atrebatum, with buildings from the 2–4C. The walls, about 2.5km/1.5m in length, are still in places 4m/13ft high. The town, laid out on a rectangular grid, was the capital of a local tribe. Excavations have revealed the foundations of a central forum, public baths, several temples and a 4C Christian church, the earliest to have been discovered in Britain. The main finds from the site are in the museum at Reading.
