(1761–1842) Artillery officer, remembered for the devastatingly effective exploding shell which he invented. Designed to scatter lead shot among enemy troops, it was adopted by the British army in 1803, was effective during the Battle of *Waterloo, and has been in use in various forms throughout the world ever since.
