(Emmanuel Shinwell, 1884–1986, baron 1970) Politician whose great age made him the last surviving link with the early days of the Labour movement, and whose chirpy character caused him to be a popular favourite. A Londoner by birth, it was in Scotland that he became involved in politics; he was on the Glasgow trades council from 1911 and was one of those who served a prison sentence in 1921 for incitement to riot. He was Labour MP for Linlithgow (1922–4, 1928–31) and then for Durham (1935–70); in the postwar Labour government he was briefly in the cabinet as minister of defence (1950–1). On his 100th birthday he made a speech in the House of Lords replying to tributes from all the political parties.
