(1857–1952, GBE 1922) Physiologist who did pioneering research into the nervous system. He demonstrated the interconnection of all reflexes (The Integrative Action of the Nervous System 1906), eventually even relating the mysterious human knee-jerk to the excited state of nerve cells in the spine. In 1932 he shared a Nobel prize with *Adrian.
