Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
|
|
(RPO) The third of the orchestras created by Thomas *Beecham, with whom it gave its first performance in 1946; the name reflected an informal arrangement with the *Royal Philharmonic Society that the new orchestra would be the one normally called upon for their concerts. Beecham remained in charge until his death in 1961; he was followed as artistic director by Rudolf Kempe, for an equally long spell (1961–75). In 1986 the orchestra became the first in the world to launch a recording company, RPO Records, and in 1987 it broke new ground with a sister orchestra for popular music, the Royal Philharmonic Pops.
