The Scotsman

The first Scottish newspaper to achieve distribution throughout Scotland (by sending the papers carriage-paid on the railways from 1865) and to establish a national identity within Britain (as the first non-London newspaper to open an office in Fleet Street, in 1868). It was founded in Edinburgh in 1817 as a radical publication, and continues to interpret its masthead of three thistles as a symbol of prickliness. In 1988 it launched a sister paper, Scotland on Sunday.
