Savoy Theatre
|
|
(London WC2) Built by Richard *D'Oyly Carte in 1881 with profits from Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, known later as the *Savoy operas. The name derived from the medieval Savoy Palace which stood here (the land was owned in the 13C by the count of Savoy). The theatre was the first public building in the world to be lit by *electricity. A major reconstruction in 1929 gave it a magnificent *Art Deco interior, destroyed when the theatre was gutted by fire in 1990.
