(1958) The first novel of Alan Sillitoe, about an anarchic beer-swilling young Nottingham factory worker, Arthur Seaton, who is in a state of half-humorous rage against everyone around him – except, from time to time, the married woman with whom he has an affair. It was brilliantly filmed by Karel Reisz in 1960 with Albert Finney and Rachel Roberts.
