(Slough, Berkshire) Organization set up to prevent suicide, by befriending and listening to the suicidal. It was established in 1953 by Chad Varah (b. 1911) with financial help from the Grocers' Company (one of the *City Livery Companies), which in that year had appointed him rector of St Stephen Walbrook. The work is largely done on the telephone, and there are more than 20,000 volunteers spending part of their time in 180 branches round the country, taking calls from those in need of reassurance.
