(80,000 in 1991) City in Greater Manchester, separated from Manchester only by the narrow river Irwell and indistinguishable on the ground from its larger neighbour. Its long-standing importance as a cotton town was greatly increased by the opening in 1894 of the *Manchester Ship Canal, on which it has extensive docks. It was given the status of a city in 1926. In recent times it has been best known for its link with L.S. *Lowry. In 2000 a major new public arts centre was opened in his honour. Known simply as The Lowry, it includes two theatres as well as an art gallery displaying his works and temporary exhibitions.
