Saki
|
|
(pen name of Hector Hugh Munro, 1870–1916) Author of witty and cold-hearted short stories. The first of several volumes (Reginald 1904) contains the line most often quoted as an example of Saki's verbal dexterity: 'The cook was a good cook, as cooks go; and as cooks go she went.' He enlisted as a trooper in World War I (though much older than most) and was killed in the trenches. The choice of Saki as his pseudonym has not been explained, but the name appears in the final verse of *Omar Khayyám.
