St Leger

|
The oldest of the five *Classics and the last in the season (run on a Saturday in September at Doncaster). It is for 3-year-old colts and fillies, nowadays over 2.8km/1.75m. Founded in 1776 by Colonel Barry St Leger (1737–89), it was an innovation in two respects; it was unusual at the time to race 3-year-olds, and most races were not in a single sprint like this (which later became standard) but in a succession of heats over a longer aggregate distance.
