Royal Marines
|
|
One of the oldest units in the British armed forces, formed in 1664 as the Duke of York's Maritime Regiment of Foot. They were described then as 'land soldiers prepared for sea service', and this has remained their task as the infantry of the Royal Navy, spearheading amphibious operations. During World War II they provided the majority of the new *commandos. The Commando Brigade has been since then the toughest operational branch of the marines, with expertise in fighting in very difficult circumstances – arctic conditions are one speciality. In 1992 there were about 7000 men serving in the Royal Marines.
