St Kilda
|
|
Group of four islands, the most westerly point of the United Kingdom (72km/45m W of Lewis with Harris) and the first place in Scotland to be designated (in 1987) a UNESCO world heritage site. It has spectacular cliff scenery, a thriving colony of sea birds and some distinctive local mammals (including the sheep of the island of Soay). The St Kilda wren is a distinct sub-species, larger and greyer than the more familiar wren. The main island, Hirta, was occupied from prehistoric times until 1930, when the last 35 inhabitants left.
