St George's Chapel

Chapel of the Order of the *Garter in *Windsor Castle. Built 1477–1528, it is an exquisite example of the Perpendicular style of *Gothic. Each knight of the Garter has his seat in the upper tier of stalls in the choir; above it hangs his banner. The chapel has been used as the burial place of monarchs during its own first century (Henry VI, Edward IV, Henry VIII with Jane Seymour) and in the 20C (Edward VII and Alexandra, George V and Mary). The vault beneath the choir also contains the bones of the beheaded *Charles I. The most interesting of the monuments is that of an heir to the throne who died young, Princess Charlotte, the daughter of *George IV; in the Urswick Chapel her shrouded body is surrounded by veiled mourners in an extraordinary composition of marble drapery (by Matthew Cotes Wyatt, 1777–1862).
