St Bride's
|
|
(London EC4) A church site of great antiquity, dedicated to St Brigid, an Irish saint of the 5–6C, and with the earliest foundations going back to her period. The present spire, the tallest of *Wren's many spires in London, is all that remained of his church after a night of bombing in 1940; the body of the church has been rebuilt to his design. The church has been associated with printing ever since Wynkyn de Worde installed *Caxton's press nearby in 1500, and the later specialization of *Fleet Street gave St Bride's a special link also with journalism.
