Sainsbury's
|
|
Britain's oldest food retailers. The first Sainsbury's was a small dairy in London's Drury Lane, opened in 1869 by John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury (1844–1928, 1849–1927); the company remained a private concern until 1973. The early shops, which specialized in meat and bacon as well as dairy products, were famous for their tiled interiors; the last counter service shop of this kind, at Rye Lane in Peckham, closed in 1982. Self-service had been introduced in Croydon in 1950, and the first Sainsbury's supermarket (an American concept and word) opened in Southampton in 1954. Large supermarkets with parking facilities became the basis of the firm's subsequent expansion through the Midlands and the north of England.
