Royal Geographical Society
|
|
(London SW7) Institution founded as the Geographical Society of London in 1830, when it absorbed the African Association (formed in 1788). From the start it has sponsored expeditions, including in its early days the great African adventures of *Livingstone, *Burton and *Speke, and the society was always the natural first place for a returning explorer to recount his discoveries. Its central activity is the furthering of geographical knowledge through lectures and publications, including its own Geographical Journal. The society moved in 1913 to its premises on Kensington Gore, designed in the 1870s as a private house by Norman Shaw.
