Royal Free Hospital
|
|
(London NW3) Established in 1828 by a young surgeon, William Marsden (founder also of the *Marsden), it was the first hospital to take patients without either payment or a letter of recommendation. The previous year Marsden had found a young woman almost dead on the steps of a church and had been unable to get her admitted to any hospital. It was known as the Royal Free from 1837, when Queen Victoria became the patron. From 1843 it was in Gray's Inn Road, until it moved in 1975 to new buildings in Hampstead.
