Theatre company in Manchester which from its first season in 1976 established a high reputation. The boldly designed theatre-in-the-round occupies a capsule, seating up to 740 people, which is suspended from the pillars of the central hall of Manchester's 19C cotton exchange. The enterprise developed from the earlier 59 and 69 Theatre Companies, and the joint founding directors were Caspar Wrede, Michael Elliott, Braham Murray and James Maxwell. A drama school, the Arden School of Theatre, was launched in association with the company in 1990.
