(Corps of Royal Engineers) The engineers, a new technical wing for the army, were formed in 1717 – just one year after the *Royal Artillery. Many famous groups within the British armed forces have developed within the Royal Engineers and then become independent; among these were the Sappers and Miners, the Royal Corps of Signals and even the land-based section of the Royal Flying Corps, the World War I enterprise which in 1918 became the *Royal Air Force.
