Rover

Company which began manufacturing cars in Coventry in 1900 and produced very successful models in two different areas of the market after World War II. The Rover 2000 (introduced in 1963) was a solidly luxurious car, as was the 3500 (1968, restyled in 1976). Meanwhile the 4-wheel-drive Land Rover, rugged and making no concessions to comfort, appeared in 1949 and rapidly established a secure place in British country life; the Range Rover (1970) was a more expensive version, as sturdy in rough conditions but with interior comforts and top speeds of a car rather than a jeep. Rover was taken over by Leyland in 1967, and a year later became part of *British Leyland. The major part of British Leyland was in turn given the name Rover Group when it was sold to *British Aerospace in 1988.
