Rothmans
|
|
Tobacco company which derives from a shop opened in 1890 in London's Fleet Street by Louis Rothman (1869–1926), who was born in the Ukraine and came to London at the age of 18. After World War II Rothmans merged with other long-established British tobacco companies, notably Carreras in 1958 and Dunhill in 1972. Carreras was founded in London in 1852 by a Spanish nobleman, José Carreras; the company named its best-known blend of tobacco after an aristocratic customer, the 3rd earl of Craven. Alfred Dunhill (1872–1959) opened a tobacconist shop in London in 1907, and in 1910 began specializing in the manufacture of pipes.
