The oldest dukedom in Scotland, conferred by Robert III in 1398 on his eldest son. With the *union of the crowns in 1603 it became the highest Scottish title of the British monarch's eldest son, the Prince of *Wales, who is officially known as the Duke of Rothesay when north of the border.
