(London SW1) Department store housed since 1936 in one of the earliest and best examples of the modernist movement in Britain (designed by William Crabtree, 1905–91). Peter Jones (1843–1905) opened a drapery shop on part of the Sloane Square site in 1877, and his business was bought in 1905 by *John Lewis.
