(1734–1802) Portrait painter who in the 1760s was exceeded only by *Reynolds and *Gainsborough in the number of his fashionable sitters. In the 1780s he became infatuated with Emma Hart, later known as Lady *Hamilton, and used her as the model for more than 50 paintings in which she appears in such varied guises as Cassandra, Mary Magdalene and Joan of Arc.
