pips
|
|
The term commonly used for the time signal on BBC radio, heard whenever a precise time is being given on the hour. The pips have been broadcast since 1924. Until 1990 they were known officially as the Greenwich Time Signal, because supplied by the *Royal Observatory, but the BBC now generates them itself. The signal consists of five short pips followed by a longer peeep, the exact stated time being at the start of the long final sound.
