(24,000 in 1991) City on the river Medway, of importance from Roman times as a river crossing on the route from the southeast coast to London. St *Augustine installed Justus, one of his monks from Canterbury, as the first bishop here in 604. A Norman bishop, Gundulf, began the present cathedral and the castle in the late 11C. The massive keep of the castle, still surviving, was added in the next century by an archbishop of Canterbury, and work continued on the cathedral, in a succession of styles, until the great *Perpendicular window was added in the west front in the late 15C. Near the cathedral, but in 19C buildings, is the *King's School, the second oldest in the country, deriving from a cathedral school which began in that foundation year of 604 and was later attached to a *Benedictine priory established by Gundulf.
