O The Roast Beef of Old England
|
|
(1748, Tate Gallery) The title by which *Hogarth's painting The Gate of Calais is commonly known. Painted after he had been arrested in Calais, suspected of being an English spy, it is a profoundly jingoistic statement by the outraged artist, who is seen sketching in the background. The central incident is the arrival of a succulent side of English beef, the sight of which is causing a fat Catholic friar and starving French soldiers to slaver with desire and admiration.
