Ritz Hotel
|
|
(London W1) Hotel on the south side of Piccadilly, overlooking Green Park. In public perception it is the classiest in London – partly because this and the other hotels of the Swiss hotelier César Ritz (1850–1918) added the word 'ritzy' to the language. Before going into business on his own, he had been the manager at the *Savoy. The Ritz was the first important steel-framed building in London, though clad in a comforting Portland stone; it opened in 1906.
