Ripon
|
|
(14,000 in 1991) Cathedral town in North Yorkshire, deriving from a monastery founded in about 660. The cathedral is notable for the number of periods and styles represented up to the 16C (including the crypt of the original monastery church). The carved wooden choir stalls and misericords of the late 15C are an outstanding feature. Ripon became a diocese in 1836.
