Rievaulx Abbey

(37km/23m N of York) Ruined *Cistercian abbey, founded in 1132. The *Early English walls of the choir and transepts survive to their full height in the beautiful Rye valley (the origin of the abbey's name). A long grassy terrace overlooking the ruins was laid out in the 18C with a classical temple at each end.
