(16km/10m SW of central London) Town on the south bank of the river Thames. Its importance, and its name, derived from 1499, when *Henry VII, who had been earl of Richmond in Yorkshire, decided to build a palace here; the place had previously been known as Sheen. Of his fanciful many-turreted riverside creation only a gatehouse now remains. The town retains an elegant 18C atmosphere, from the time when the royal family spent much of their time at nearby *Kew.
Richmond-upon-Thames (163,000 in 1991) is a Greater London borough, formed in 1965 and stretching either side of Richmond along the Thames, from Hampton Court to Barnes.
