David Ricardo

|
(1772–1823) Economist who developed the theories of Adam *Smith, treating the subject more as a science than as a branch of philosophy. His main work was On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817). He was influential in the early stages of the campaign for free trade and for the abolition of the *Corn Laws. He made his career in the Stock Exchange and in 1819 was elected a member of parliament. Though Jewish by birth, of Dutch origin, he abandoned the Jewish faith as a young man and so was able to take his seat in the House of Commons.
