Revolution of 1688

(also known as the Glorious Revolution) The coup which transferred the crown from *James II to *William III and Mary, considered glorious because it introduced *constitutional monarchy. It is also known as the Bloodless Revolution. In England and Wales the new monarchs were unopposed, but resistance in Scotland led to the massacre of *Glencoe; and in 1689 James II landed in Ireland for a campaign which ended with his defeat at the Battle of the *Boyne.
