News and information services agency, founded in London in 1851 by a German-born immigrant, Paul Julius Reuter (1816–99). He set up an office near the Stock Exchange and telegraphed prices to Paris via the undersea cable between Dover and Calais (he had previously used carrier pigeons for the same purpose between Brussels and Aachen). By the end of the decade he was conveying general news as well, and as telegraphic links extended round the world his firm became the first international news agency.
Reuters was restructured in 1941 as a private company, jointly owned by the national newspapers and by the *Press Association (representing the regional press). In 1984, by which time the global electronic extension of its financial services had become very profitable, Reuters was floated as a public company.
