Sporting dogs used for retrieving game which has been shot. The most common breed is the Labrador retriever (usually shortened to Labrador). It originated in the region of Labrador, in northeast Canada, where it swam in the freezing waters to help fishermen place their nets. The breed has a short dense coat, usually black but sometimes brown or yellow. The golden retriever, with a wavy coat and feathering on legs and tail, was bred near Inverness in the mid-19C by selecting yellow puppies with these characteristics.
