(John Reith, 1889–1971, kt 1927, baron 1940) Creator of the *BBC from its beginnings in 1922 and pioneer of the concept of public service broadcasting. The Reith Lectures were established in his honour in 1948, the first series of six being given in that year by Bertrand Russell – who chose as his subject 'Authority and the Individual'. A new lecturer is appointed each year (it is radio's most prestigious invitation) and the lectures are first broadcast on Radio 4 in November and December.
