Raphael Cartoons
|
|
(c.1514, Victoria and Albert Museum) Seven of the ten designs for tapestries on New Testament themes which were commissioned from *Raphael by *Leo X. In 1623 they were bought in Rome on behalf of the future *Charles I, to serve as patterns for the factory recently established at *Mortlake. They miraculously survived the ravages of the *Commonwealth, and the cartoon gallery at *Hampton Court was designed for them by *Wren in the late 17C. They have been on loan to the V&A since 1865.
