(1536) Uprising in Yorkshire, led by Robert Aske (c.1501–37), which was provoked by various aspects of the *Reformation but in particular by the start of the *dissolution of the monasteries. The rebels gathered a large army and captured York, but disbanded after being misled into believing that attention would be paid to their grievances and that there would be a general pardon. More than 200 were executed, including Aske himself, who was hanged, drawn and quartered in York.
