Alf Ramsey

(1920–99, kt 1967) Manager responsible for two of the greatest successes of English football. In eight years under his management (1955–63) *Ipswich Town rose from Division 3 to championship of the League, including the rare feat of winning Division 2 and Division 1 in successive years (1961, 62); astonishingly it was a feat which he had also achieved as a player with Tottenham Hotspur (1950, 51). As manager of the England team (1963–74), he took them to their World Cup victory in 1966. His own playing career included 32 England caps.
