(1852–1916, KCB 1902) Scottish experimental chemist with the unique distinction of having discovered an entire family of elements – the inert or noble gases – beginning with argon in 1894, through helium (1895, as an element on earth rather than in the sun) and neon, krypton and xenon (all 1898) to radon in 1910. He was awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1904.
