R-38
|
|
The first of two British airship disasters (the other being the *R-101). The R-38 was built at Cardington in Bedfordshire, commissioned by the US navy. On its fourth flight, on 24 August 1921, its frame crumpled and ruptured the skin, causing the hydrogen to escape and ignite. The airship fell into the Humber, killing 44 of the 49 British and US service personnel on board.
