(London SE10) Centrepiece of the 17C buildings at *Greenwich, with a view to the river in one direction and across Greenwich Park in the other. The earliest use in Britain of the *Palladian style, it was designed in 1616 by Inigo *Jones for one queen (Anne of Denmark, wife of *James I) and was completed in 1629–40 for another (Henrietta Maria, wife of *Charles I). Extensive wings, connected by colonnades, were added in 1807–9 to commemorate *Trafalgar. In 1934 the entire complex of buildings became the home of the *National Maritime Museum.
