Queensberry Rules
|
|
The rules governing modern *boxing, being a modification by John Chambers of the previous rules of the London Prize Ring. To give them added authority they were published in 1867 under the name of an aristocratic patron of boxing, the marquess of Queensberry (1844–1900, known also in relation to Oscar *Wilde). They were only gradually adopted by professionals, being considered soft by many (particularly in respect of fighting with gloves instead of bare fists), but they have been standard since their use in the world heavyweight bout between John Sullivan and Gentleman Jim Corbett in New Orleans in 1892.
