(Queen Elizabeth II) The third of the great *Cunard liners built on Clydeside and launched by a British queen – in this case Elizabeth II in 1967 – in the tradition of the *Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. The QE2 (294m/963ft long and displacing 66,450 tons) was in 1975 retired from the transatlantic route to become a cruise ship. She took part in the *Falklands War, carrying 3000 troops to the south Atlantic. In August 1992 her hull was considerably damaged when she ran aground off Cape Cod, on a day trip from New York to Martha's Vineyard.
