The most celebrated weekly magazine in the history of British photo-journalism, though it survived for only a relatively short time. It was launched in 1938 by Edward Hulton (1906–88), and in the years immediately after the war had a circulation of more than 1.3 million. It closed in 1957, by which time the circulation had halved, but its legacy is a remarkable pictorial record of two decades.
