Punch
|
|
, or the London Charivari The leading vehicle in Britain for cartoonists, whether political or purely humorous, for the greater part of 150 years. Founded in 1841, the magazine soon included artists such as *Tenniel and *du Maurier among its regular contributors. It took its name from the puppet character Punch, who until 1954 appeared with his dog Toby on the cover (drawn by Richard Doyle, 1824–83). In the mid-20C Punch was an indispensable item in every dentist's waiting room, but falling circulation led to its demise in 1992 (followed by a revival later in the decade and then closure again in 2002).
